Social media has had a profound impact on the social expectations of young people, particularly in relation to happiness, lifestyle and social activity. Distorted social expectations are placing additional pressures on young people and leading to feelings of discontent, anxiety and loneliness.
The purpose of this project is to examine the link between social media, false expectations and feelings of loneliness. It will highlight the issue and raise awareness of the role that social media plays in the negative emotions of young people, encouraging them to re-evaluate their social expectations, which may have been distorted by what the see on social media.
It is a prompt, a call to action, encouraging young people to question the reality behind what they see on social media.
These sensory, textural images abstractly represent the experience of anxiety.
Common social media phrases are presented, highlighting them within the context of the 'Get Real' call to action.
